Back Story
A little history first. Over the last 2 months (January to March) Aidan had complained of intermittent leg pain. Nothing serious or that lasted for long periods of time just a random complaint here and there. Mike and I attributed it to a growth spurt since he had no injury and no marks to show. Then, not long after his first complaint of pain we noticed that he had started to become very clumsy. Again, we attributed it to a growth spurt and our assumptions were backed by the fact that he had grown about 3/4 of an inch and all of his pants were too small. Yet something kept nagging at me to get him in to see his ppediatrician Dr. Albertini. However, as these things often go, I convinced myself that there was nothing to worry about and we continued about our business.
Then on February 26th my mom and I left for a trip to Philadelphia where we were gone for 6 days. On the 2nd day after our return Sage, Aidan, and myself were at the gym at Badger Elementary. The boys were running around playing when one of the mothers asked me if Aidan had injured himself because he was limping. We both sat and watched him discussing different things it could be and then noticed that not only was he limping but he was dragging his left foot as he was running. Now I was in a panic.
I went straight home and called his ped's office and was told that they could see him in a week and a half. This was not going to work, so I called Michael and my general practitioner who agreed to see him that day.
When we went in I asked about the possibility of something in the brain but he felt that we should start with the easiest first. He felt that Aidan could be having hip or joint problems and ordered and MRI on both. Two and a half weeks later Aidan had his MRI with anesthesia on his left hip and knee. By the next day the radiologist had refereed us to an orthopedic surgeon because he believed that he saw a problem in Aidan's knee.
The following week we met with Andres Garcia. He looked at Aidan and said that he saw nothing in his exam or in the MRI that was explain Aidan's situation but to be safe ordered x-rays of Aidan's hip and knee. Once again, nothing. He informed me that he believed Aidan's problem to be neurological and that he did not feel safe "sitting on it." He felt we needed to get into Shriner's or Children's as soon as possible.
Once again I was back on the phone. First I called our general practiciner to have them make an appointment and then I called myself. I was told that the quickest way to get an appointment was to have our doc and do a phone consult with a neurologist at Children's. Then again I called the general and told them what I had found out. At first they responded with no urgency and then I explained that his symptoms had increased and that he was now drooling and falling over. With this everything changed and they agreed that they would call that day. Soon, I received a call that Children's would see us on April 14 (the date was April 3 that day.)
Something inside of me knew that our lives were going to change forever on that day. I made sure the house was clean and the fridge was cleaned out in case anyone needed to get into our home. I also wanted to make sure that we arrived a day early so we could enjoy a "normal" day before things changed. Something just kept telling me that what was about to come would not be good news. Each night I would lie in bed my mind whirling. I would pray for hours on end begging the Lord to please keep Aidan safe and not let him have a brain tumor. My mind knew before my heart would allow me to believe that something like this was about to happen.
