Thursday August 10

Today was labs and doctor day.  Aidan's appointment. was at 9am which meant that we had to get his Emla cream on him by 8am.  Now, to some of you that doesn't sound too bad. However, we have been night owls lately so the idea of getting up at 7am to start getting ready did not exactly please me.  We did what we needed to though.  Once again Aidan was not happy to have his cream put on because he knew that it meant that he was going to have to get George put on.
Once at the hospital Aidan was still not very happy about having to have labs done.  Julie, Child Life Specialist, saw us in the waiting room and asked us if we needed any help today.  We told her how tough it has been for Aidan that last couple of times he has been accessed.  She offered to bring out Eddie, a puppet, for Aidan to do some medical play with and to pretend he was accessing Eddie's port.  This went well.  Aidan was having a good time and not surprisingly he knew exactly what to do.  Soon it was time to head into room for Aidan to get accessed.  Almost immediately he was in a panic.  Julie and the nurses were working very hard to ease Aidan's anxiety and to distract him.  Sadly, nothing was really doing the job and we had to just proceed.  The good news was that it all happens rather quickly and it almost over before it even begins.  After George was in though Aidan did not want him taken out and he kept asking for Dr. Chen to come and to give him sleepy medicine.  It was very touching and sad at the same time.  I am glad that Dr. Chen gives him such comfort, but sad that the procedure makes him so unhappy that he want to get sleepy medicine.

Once George was out and labs were done it was time for Aidan to get his height, weight, and blood pressure before we saw Dr. Geyer.  Aidan's weight and height are the same even though we would like to see him put back a little of the weight he lost, but it is still good news.  Soon Dr. Geyer arrived.  He seemed to be an a especially good mood day.  Dr. Geyer is always very nice but also very reserved.  Today he just seemed, giddy.  It was so nice to see his enthusiasm when discussing Aidan's health and future.  We are all sure that we are heading down the right path of treatment and we are all very hopeful that things will continue to go well.  Four years and ten months to go to be cancer free.
The only bad news of the day was that Aidan's next MRI is scheduled for August 18th which is his birthday.  We were not very happy about that, especially since we will now have to reschedule his birthday party we had planned to have on Saturday the 19th down in the Tri-Cities.  Well, what can you do?  If we don't do it on the 18th then we have to wait until the 26th of September.  Much too long away.
After our appointment we came back to the room to get things ready to go home for the big golf tournament tomorrow.  Hopefully we will have safe trip and a great turnout tomorrow.
